The University of Arizona data hub
Recognizing the growing significance of data science, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) across diverse domains and their lack of diversity, the hub for diverse leadership in data science within the University of Arizona (data hub hereafter) will be a dynamic and inclusive environment that uplifts the perspectives and expertise of minoritized students, staff, and researchers, ultimately promoting retention and novel contributions to data science and related fields.
The data hub will focus on four key aspects.
1
The data hub will develop accessible resources for educators, incorporating real-world relating to environmental science, sustainability, urban planning, health, ecology, climate science, and environmental justice to underscore the societal implications of data science.2
The data hub will curate resources centered on ethics in machine learning and AI and in applications to these and other fields, addressing critical concerns in this domain about the development and use of data science tools.3
The data hub will critically evaluate materials used in data science education, contextualizing them in terms of historical and social sensitivities.4
The data hub will provide robust mentorship and support to students and academics from marginalized backgrounds, enabling them to excel in data science and participate in impactful projects from unique perspectives. The data hub is closely associated with the center for diverse leadership in science at the University of California, Los Angeles (https://www.ioes.ucla.edu/diversity/), led by Dr. Aradhna Tripati.
